Following an open call during the Autumn, the adjudication panel selected three composers and music creators to work with mentoring composer John Rea and a quartet of musicians from Sinfonia Cymru to create brand new compositions. Since the beginning of the year, Lowri Mair Jones, Nathan James Dearden and Tomos Williams have been developing and refining their compositions, culminating with the first public performance of the pieces during the ceremony.

'two hymns' at Whiddon Autumn Festival

Performer(s): Whiddon Festival String Quartet

Event description

Our Festival comes to a contemplative close with a magical choral Compline service by candlelight in Gidleigh Church.

Compline is a beautiful church service for the end of the day, characterised by meditative threads of medieval plainchant and prayers for a peaceful night. As well as singing the chant, Corvus Consort also performs choral motets by Jean Mouton, William Byrd and Gabriel Jackson.

The service will open with an instrumental prelude composed specially for the service by 2023 Composer-in-Residece Nathan James Dearden, performed by our very own Festival String Quartet.

Compline is a church service, so it is free to attend. Donations will be collected on exit, and will be split equally between Gidleigh Church and WAF.
